Lyrics

It's a human sign
When things go wrong,
When the scent of her lingers,
And temptation' s strong.
Into the boundary
Of each married man
Sweet deceip t comes a callin',
And negativity lands.
Cold, cold heart,
Hard done by you.
Some things look better, baby,
Just passin' through.
And it's no sacrifice,
Just a simple word.
It's two hearts living
In two separate worlds.
But it's no sacrifice,
No sacrifice,
It's no sacrifice at all.
Mutual misunderstanding
After the fact.
Sensitivity builds a prison
In the final act.
Welcome direction,
No stone unturned,
No tears to damn you,
When jealousy burns.
Cold, cold heart,
Hard done by you.
Some things look better, baby,
Just passin' through.
I gave my heart.
I gave my heart.
I gave my heart.
I gave my heart.

Notes

Liner notes

I can't believe no-one did 'Candle in the Wind.'

Sinéad O'Connor (Source: Two Rooms: Celebrating the Songs of Elton John & Bernie Taupin)

Bernie Taupin's lyrics refer to the marital problems he was having at the time; the loss of the relationship is "no sacrifice."

(Source: Wikipedia)

Elton John's music video portrays a man raising his daughter alone after he and his wife have marital problems. Coincidentally, that's almost exactly what happened to Sinéad and her boyfriend John Waters a few years after this was recorded, shortly after the birth of their daughter Róisín.
