Quotes
Sinéad (Source: New York Times)
"I think there are about four levels to [the songs on Gospel Oak. They're lullabies that I wrote for myself. They're lullabies for other people. They're all love songs. And they're also what I would call Irish nationalist songs."
I also like the idea of calling it 'Gospel Oak,' because the oak is a symbol of the worship of the mother. So it's the gospel of the mother."
(Source: John Reynolds)
This album was based in affirmation and the hymn-like quality of the songs required an extremely tender sound from the recording. Another Ghostrooms recording, Gospel Oak was a combination of choral vocals built by tracking Sinead.
The process saw her become a one-person choir, then backed by some truly organic instruments. These were played by some of my favourite musicians, including Davey Spillane, Caroline Dale, Justin Adams and Clare Kenny.
