Lyrics

(Source: as heard)

Shedroc, Meshak and Abendigo
Were condemned to be thrown in the furnace.
Shedroc, Meshak and Abendigo,
They had no fear, no fear at all.
It was igziabeher y mas gan,
It was God, let him be praised.
It was igziabeher y mas gan
It was God, let him be praised.
Shedroc, Meshak and Abendigo.
It was three, now it's four in the fire.
Shedroc, Meshak and Abendigo.
All were amazed by such mighty power.
It was igziabeher y mas gan,
It was God, let him be praised.
It was igziabeher y mas gan
It was God, let him be praised.
Shedroc, Meshak and Abendigo.
Shedroc, Meshak and Abendigo.
Shedroc, Meshak and Abendigo.
Shedroc, Meshak and Abendigo.
Shedroc, Meshak and Abendigo.
Shedroc, Meshak and Abendigo.
Shedroc, Meshak and Abendigo.
Shedroc, Meshak and Abendigo.

Notes

Originally recorded by The Abyssinians and released as a single on their Clinch label in 1973. It was also included on their 1976 hit album Satta Massagana, as was "Y Mas Gan," also covered by Sinéad. The song is based on a story from the Old Testament book of Daniel, in which three young men are condemned to death by fire for refusing to worship a statue of King Nebuchadnezzar II.

Note that the dub version is called "Shedroc" instead of "Abendigo." This could simply be an error by Keltia Records (who included it on the Throw Down Your Arms deluxe edition, but, in fact, the Abyssinians' own dub version is also called both "Abendigo dub" and "Shedrach dub.") The latter spelling was used on the b-side of their "Abendigo" single.

igziabeher y mas gan:

Amharic (Ethiopian) "Let God be praised." There are many different ways of transliterating the Amharic phrase into English. For more details, please see Words of Wisdom: Biblical Quotations in Reggae Lyrics" (which transliterates the phrase as 'igzee'abihier yimmesgen').
